1889-09-24 (120lbs) Frank Murphy nc 68 (finish) Tommy Warren, California AC, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Hiram Cook. Billed for the 120lbs world title, after the referee left the stage on declaring that the match was unsatisfactory it was eventually discovered that both Murphy (119) and Warren (118) had agreed to put on a fake fight in order to get a draw.

On 12 December, in England, Morgan Crowther challenged the world at 120lbs, two-ounce gloves, £100-a-side and no one barred.

Meanwhile, on 24 June 1890, Murphy received four months hard labour for assault. Following that, he was a spent force, dying in Birmingham, England on 15 March 1893 at the age of 29.
