1889-09-30 Jem Smith w pts 10 Jack Wannop, Novelty Theatre, The Strand, London, England. Referee: W. J. King. Although not billed for the English championship, with Smith being the recognised champion it was seen as a defence despite it not meeting championship conditions. A poor contest, it did not really warm up until the ninth round when Smith dropped his rival with a terrific right to the ribs. On getting up Wannop somehow survived the rest of the session before spending the tenth trying to nail Smith, who was happy to cruise to the bell.

The 36-year-old Wannop, who was a famous wrestler, next won a catchweight contest when forcing Josh Coshett to retire inside 12 rounds at the Ormonde Club, Walworth, London on 21 April 1890, but never made his mark in boxing.
