1889-10-01 (94lbs) Alf Gunning drew 24 (finish) Jim Pope, Queen’s Head Public House, West Smithfield, London, England
1 October (94lbs) Alf Gunning drew 24 (finish) Jim Pope, Queen’s Head Public House, West Smithfield, London, England]]. Referee: Tom Longer. Billed for the English 94lbs title, although Pope was having the worst of it at the time, Gunning agreed to the bout ending and being declared a draw as suggested by the referee and proprietor. After a dozen well contested rounds Gunning, much the stronger of the pair at this stage, turned the tap on and dropped Pope heavily in the 15th. While Pope was still well in the contest, the money had been on Gunning from the 20th onwards and it was a surprise that he agreed on the draw.
