1889-10-14 (126lbs) Bill Reader w pts 12 Sam Blakelock, Astley’s Amphitheatre, Lambeth, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the English 126lbs title, in an excellent contest that produced top-class boxing it was the extra fitness and power of Reader (126) that enabled him to outpoint Blakelock (125). There were no knockdowns, but it was not for the want of trying. Two more championship competition winners were Fred Johnson (who outpointed Bill Baxter over four rounds at the Royal Aquarium Theatre, Westminster, London on 7 December) and Harry Spurden (who outpointed Bill Gibbs over four rounds at the Saddlers Wells Theatre, Clerkenwell, London on 14 December).
