1889-10-28 (148lbs) Ted White w disq 8 (12) Tom Meadows, South London Gym, Kennington, London, England. Referee: Robert Watson. Although there was no title billing attached, White (148) claimed the English 148lbs crown after beating Meadows, who although born in London was doing his fighting in Australia. Meadows, who was a good stone lighter than his opponent, was never really in with a chance despite showing clever defensive qualities and by the end of the sixth round, having been badly hurt, he looked to be on his way out. Somehow getting through the seventh, Meadows had resorted to holding on at every opportunity and at the end of the eighth, after repeated warnings, the referee disqualified him. A championship competition at the weight saw Jim Burchell outpoint Bill Husbands over four rounds at the Royal Aquarium Theatre, Westminster, London on 7 December 1889.
