1889-11-27 (115/116lbs) Cal McCarthy w rtd 7 (finish) Mike McGough, NYC, New York, USA. Held on a barge and made at 115lbs, give or take a pound, with skin-tight gloves in use, McGough (also known as Nolan) made the early running as McCarthy (115) dodged and moved. However, McGough was beginning to tire and in the fifth round his right eye was almost closed from a smashing uppercut. Struck after the bell ended round six, McGough (116) was amazingly denied a foul, the referee deciding that the noise was such that McCarthy was unable to hear the gong. The seventh saw both men in determined mood, but after being hit by a left swing to the jaw McGough was forced to retire with a broken jaw, having lost many of his teeth. In England on 7 December, Joe Rampling outpointed Tom Gardner over four rounds at the Royal Aquarium Theatre, Westminster, London to win a 116lbs championship competition, while Goody York challenged the world at the weight on the same day.
