1889-12-05 (140lbs) Jack McAuliffe drew 15 Mike Daly, Cribb Club, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Joe Lannon. Made at catchweights, right from the start McAuliffe (144) landed his blows on Daly (139) when and where he pleased, with the latter boxing mainly in defensive mode. Twice during the contest Daly hurt McAuliffe with heavy shots, but the American champion smashed in searing punches virtually in every session and although he could not put his man down he certainly tried. The last two rounds saw Daly in a groggy condition, but he lasted out for the drawn verdict due to him under the terms of agreement. Had Daly won he would have had a good claim to the American 140lbs title.
