1889-12-18 (112lbs) Con Donovan w co 11 (finish) Jack Hullett, Hop & Malt Exchange, The Borough, London, England. Although no weights were given, later gossip stated this to be a defence of Donovan’s English 112lbs title claim, with both inside eight stone. With Donovan looking the most dangerous of the pair, before too long Hullett’s eyes were damaged and beginning to close rapidly. Many of the sessions were well contested, but in the 11th Hullett ran into a solid left, and following some work to his body he was counted out after being hit by a crunching blow to the head. However, no more is heard from Donovan at the weight.
On 31 May 1890, at the Royal Agricultural Hall, Islington, London, Charlie Roberts outpointed Sid Phillips over three rounds in the final of a 112lbs championship competition, which was followed by him claiming the English title.
