1890-01-31 (107lbs) Tommy Spider Kelly w co 10 (finish) Chappie Moran, Easton, Pennsylvania, USA. Held in a small hall, and billed for the world title, the contest had been articled at 105lbs (in skin-tight gloves) plus or minus two pounds before going went ahead at 107lbs despite it being rumoured that Kelly (106¾) actually scaled 108¾lbs. After cutting Moran (104½) over the left eye in the first round and knocking him down in the second, the taller Kelly continued to build on his good start. However, by the fifth it had developed into a tough battle, and in the ninth Kelly was groggy before being knocked down in the tenth. On getting up all but beaten, Kelly rushed at Moran. It seemed foolhardy, but moments later the fight was his when a right to the neck saw the Englishman counted out after banging his head on a ring post on his way to the floor.
