1890-02-18 (154bs) Nonpareil Jack Dempsey w rtd 28 (finish) Billy McCarthy, California AC, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Hiram Cook. Made at 156lbs, the fight was delayed when it was discovered that the air had been let out of the regulation five-ounce gloves. It eventually went ahead with more stuffing inserted and weighing in the region of three to four ounces. There was plenty of good fighting during the first 20 rounds, with the men getting off heavy punches from both hands, but beyond that period it was evident that McCarthy (151½) was weakening, especially from body blows. Following a few rounds of little activity, when Dempsey (147½) picked it up in the 26th McCarthy was belted all over the ring. Knocked down four times in the 27th and twice in the 28th, even though McCarthy was a beaten man he continued to get up, and it was only when Dempsey implored the referee to stop the carnage that the Englishman’s corner finally pulled their man out.
