1890-03-14 (118lbs) Torpedo Billy Murphy w co 4 (finish) Tommy Warren, Occidental Club, San Francisco, California, USA. Billed for the world 118lbs title, Warren (118) was briefly down in the first round before storming back. Fighting frenetically, both men went to the boards in the fourth with Murphy (116½) on top of his opponent. Although it was clear that Murphy had kneed Warren in the stomach and the latter had failed to get up at ‘ten’, the two men carried on fighting. On Warren being knocked down again and the fight being stopped by the police, it was announced that the referee had counted Warren out earlier and that Murphy was the winner. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that four-ounce gloves were in use.
