1890-03-21 (136lbs) Jack McAuliffe w co 47 (finish) Jim Carroll, Californian Athletic Club, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Hiram Cook. With McAuliffe unable to make the articled 133lbs, a few days before the fight it was announced that he had surrendered the title to Carroll and that the contest would go on at a higher weight with five¬-ounce gloves in use. A clever affair saw McAuliffe (134½) temporarily put down in the fifth round before dropping Carroll (135½) twice in the 12th with left-right combinations to the jaw. Carroll got back into it by dint of clever boxing and making McAuliffe miss with his leads, but by the 40th the pace had slackened off to a crawl until some savage slugging in the 47th saw Carroll knocked out by a solid blow to the jaw.
