1890-04-18 (140lbs) Jim Verrall w co 5 (20) George Sullivan, Queen Street Exchange Club, Cheapside, London, England. Made at 140lbs, Sullivan made a good start when having Verrall down in the second round, but by the fourth the latter was doing all the fighting with the result looking a foregone conclusion. The end came in the fifth when Sullivan was counted out after being smashed to the floor by a right to the jaw.
Following the contest, although the winner claimed the English title at the weight he failed to consolidate the position.
On 6 May, Sam Powell challenged all England at 140lbs prior to Arthur Gutteridge winning a championship competition at the weight when outpointing Andy Cannon over three rounds at the Royal Agricultural Hall, Islington, London on 31 May.
