1890-04-28 (140lbs) Jim Burge drew 50 (finish) George Dawson, Gymnastic Club, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Captain McDonald. Billed for the Australian, Imperial British Empire and world 140lb titles, according to the Sydney Telegraph Dawson (138) did all the fighting from the start, having Burge (130) in a bad way prior to the 20th round. Strangely, Dawson failed to follow up, playing a waiting game, and Burge’s wonderful endurance stood him in good stead despite him being knocked all over the ring at times. Dawson, who concentrated on the left jab to the face and rights to the ribs, had Burge well beaten by the 23rd but he was unable to take advantage due to him tiring rapidly and the contest became a tedious one after the 35th session. The fight came to an end following 50 hard-fought rounds when, with neither man judged to be capable of winning at that stage due to their hands having gone, the referee decided upon a draw.
