1890-05-01 (106lbs) Mike Small w rtd 13 (finish) Jack Hicks, London, England. Taking place on a Con Donovan show in the west-end of London, the taller Hicks (110) was just about ahead following 12 rounds of hurricane-paced boxing that had taken a toll on both men. Unfortunately for Hicks, having dislocated a thumb during the 13th he was forced to retire, thus handing the win to Small. Contested in small gloves, while there was no championship billing reported later gossip assumed that Small, who was thought to weigh in the region of 106lbs, had claimed the English title at that weight on winning.
