1890-05-30 (145/146lbs) achie Thomson w rsc 2 (12) Alf Hanlon, Peter Street Grand Circus, Manchester, England. Referee: Andrew Marsden. Made at 145lbs, Thomson (144) started well, taking the opening round with ease, and went on to drop Hanlon (144) heavily in the second after landing with a solid blow to the jaw. Although Hanlon got to his feet he was badly dazed and with Thomson looking to finish it the fight was stopped by the police, whereupon the referee awarded the decision to the latter.
Despite there being no title billing attached, Thomson was claiming the English title at that weight from thereon.
Two men who came through to win championship competitions at 146lbs were William Robinson (who outpointed James Lowes over four rounds on 18 October at Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle) and Ted Dorkings (who outpointed Felix Scott over four rounds on 4 June 1892 at the Central Hall, Holborn, London), while Jim Burchill (September) and Ted Bryant (January 1892) challenged all England.
