7 June (108lbs) Eddie Avery w co 12 (finish) Hughie Boyle, Woodside, Queens, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Con McAuliffe. Held in a well-known hostelry on Long Island and billed for the American/World 108lbs title, with skin-tight gloves preferred and articled under MoQ Rules, the fight lasted some 45 minutes before Boyle (106¾), badly cut over the right eye, was smashed to the canvas for the full count following a fierce uppercut to the throat. Avery (107) had the best of it almost throughout with Boyle taking several counts.

On 4 December 1891, Boyle was reinstated as an amateur by the AAU before coming back to meet Connie Sullivan a year later.
