16 July (112lbs) Charlie Roberts w co 8 (12) Charlie Mansford, Greyhound Hotel, Newmarket, England. Referee: Mr Thompson. Despite reports not giving individual weights or billing, with both men inside eight stone it was eventually recognised to be a defence of Roberts’ English 112lbs title claim, which then appears to go nowhere. The fight report is just as brief, stating that Mansford was dropped three times in the seventh before Roberts finished him off in the eighth.

Two more men to win championship competitions and claim the 112lbs English title on the back of them were Phil Ocker (who outpointed Jack Gray over three rounds at Rowland’s Circus, Carr Lane, Hull on 10 January 1891) and Enos Gamble (who outpointed Jem Donovan over three rounds at the Wellington Street Hall, Islington, London on 13 May 1891).
