1890-07-17 (102lbs) Joe Portley drew 20 (finish) Jim Bond, Hop & Malt Exchange, The Borough, London, England. Referee: Bill Natty. Made at catchweights, it was very evenly contested with both men going for the body and doing good work. The bout had been put together at the last minute due to withdrawals, and Portley, by far the smaller man, agreed to take on Bond (mistakenly named as Jim Read, of Walworth, by The Sportsman) to save the show. At the end of 18 rounds the referee announced that as it was getting late the men would box just two more rounds and if neither was stopped a draw would be given as it had been so close.
Portley, who was inside 102lbs, claimed the English title at that weight.
