1890-08-07 (106lbs) Mike Small w pts 20 Wag Lansdowne, Queen’s Head Public House, West Smithfield, London, England. Referee: J. R. Godfrey. Thought to involve the English 106lbs title despite a lack of billing, it was a terrific contest with Small (104) mainly going for the body and Lansdowne (106) the head. From the 12th through to the 14th Small took a fair lead but eventually he was made to fight hard when pressed strongly towards the finishing post, and it was only the casting vote of the referee that gained him victory.
Surprisingly, on 3 January 1891 the Sporting Life reported that Small stated that he had never had a claim to the English 104 and 106lbs titles, even if he was recognised by some as being the champion. That statement was supported by the fact that he would be fighting in future at 102lbs, his natural weight.
