1890-09-30 (94lbs) Alf Gunning w rtd 16 (20) Young Hyland, Ancient Concert Rooms, Dublin, Ireland. Despite no title billing or weights being announced, with Gunning’s English 94lbs title claim thought to have been at stake he certainly treated the fight seriously when forcing matters all the way. On top right from the opening bell, Gunning handed out a severe beating to Hyland, who was retired by his handlers at the end of the 16th when realising that his cause was a hopeless one.

Following this, Gunning was fighting at a higher weight.
