1890-10-23 (114lbs) George Dixon w rtd 40 (finish) Johnny Murphy, Gladstone AC, Providence, Rhode Island, USA. Referee: Dan Coakley. Billed for the world 114lbs title using two-ounce gloves, the noticeably overmatched Murphy (113½) was pounded throughout the contest without being dropped, and it was only in the 40th round when his seconds threw in the towel that the badly disfigured fighter was saved from taking a further beating at the hands of Dixon (113½).
