1890-10-24 (104lbs) Jem Stevens w rsc 7 (20) Tom De Groat, St Andrew’s Hall, Westminster, London, England. Referee: J. T. Hulls. Billed for the English 104lbs title and reported to be one of the greatest glove fights ever seen, by the end of the fourth round Stevens (101) was beginning to get on top, his left hand stabbing his opponent’s face at regular intervals. Opening up in the fifth, Stevens had his man over three times in all, the last occasion seeing the unfortunate De Groat (101½) rescued by the bell while still in a bad way. Somewhat surprisingly De Groat made it through the sixth without mishap, but in the seventh he weakened badly, and with Stevens attacking him non-stop he was pulled out by his corner midway through the session.
On winning, Stevens was immediately challenged by Herbert Tarrant.
