19 January (107lbs) Tommy Spider Kelly w pts 10 Frank Donovan, Knickerbocker Gardens, Hoboken, New Jersey, USA. Referee: Jim Lavelle. The New York World stated that on the day of the fight Kelly was already down to the required 107lbs, with five-ounce gloves to be in use. The paper reported that the men sparred cautiously at the start before Kelly hurt Donovan badly in the second round after landing three solid blows to the jugular. It soon became one sided, with Kelly doing all the fighting and easily stopping Donovan’s efforts to come forward. At the call of time Donovan was dazed and groggy, and would have been in no condition to carry on if the terms of agreement had called for a finish.
Although there were reports of Kelly trying to make a match with Eddie Avery a few weeks later, that appears to be the last time we hear of him defending his claim at the weight.
