1891-01-30 (104lbs) Jem Stevens w rtd 12 (20) Herbert Tarrant, St Andrew’s Hall, Westminster, London, England. Referee: Sam Blakelock. Billed for the English 104lbs title over 20 rounds, Tarrant looked trained to the minute while Stevens, suffering from an attack of boils, did not look to be in the best of condition. Marked over his left eye in the first round, Stevens, the taller man, was floored in the second before coming back hard to drop Tarrant with a right to the jaw in the third. Taking command in the fourth, Stevens, his damaged eye fast closing, was almost on the verge of finishing the badly marked-up Tarrant when time was called. Dropped in the 11th before being saved by the session coming to a halt Tarrant had little left, and after being floored again in the 12th his corner pulled him out of the contest.
