1891-02-16 (140lbs) Tommy Ryan w rtd 76 Danny Needham, Twin City AC, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Referee: Walter Watson. Ryan (139) admitted prior to the fight that if he was to be a world champion Needham (138½) would have to be eliminated, just as Con Doyle (knocked out in 28 rounds) had been in Shelby on 6 September 1890.
Although there was no title billing as such the Chicago Tribune reported it as being the greatest (four ounce) glove fight seen in the USA up to that time, while the New Orleans Daily Picayune supported Ryan's claim to be recognised as the American 142lbs champion on the result. This was after Ryan had knocked Needham down time and again before the latter’s seconds threw the sponge in at the end of the 76th round. On winning, Ryan also had a good claim to the American 140lbs title, but as a growing lad he did not box below that weight again.
