1891-03-07 (160lbs) John O’Brien w co 9 (15) Ted White, Pelican Club, Soho, London, England. Made at 160lbs, O’Brien (159) claimed the English 160lbs title on the result and later in the year was also claiming to be the 158lbs champion, despite being knocked out in the first round of a catchweight contest by Ted Bryant on 25 November 1890 at the St Andrew’s Hall, Westminster, London. The contest had seen White (151), weakening by the fourth following a very fast start, using the left to keep O’Brien at bay but by the end of the eighth he was seen to be all-in after slipping down at the end of the session. At this stage of the fight it was clear that O’Brien was way behind on points but after mounting a sustained attack in the ninth he had White over for ‘nine’ with a right to the jaw. Now thoroughly used up White was there for the taking, and it was no surprise when O’Brien immediately sent him to the floor again, this time for the full count. On 5 January 1892, Ted Fenton challenged all England at 160lbs.
