1891-03-07 (160lbs) John O’Brien w co 9 (15) Ted White, Pelican Club, Soho, London, England. Made at 160lbs. The contest had seen White (151), weakening by the fourth following a very fast start, using the left to keep O’Brien (159) at bay, but by the end of the eighth he was seen to be all-in after slipping down at the end of the session. Although O’Brien was way behind on points, after mounting a sustained attack in the ninth he had White over for ‘nine’ with a right to the jaw. Now thoroughly used up White was there for the taking, and it was no surprise when O’Brien immediately sent him to the floor again, this time for the full count.
Calling himself the English 160lbs champion on the result, later in the year O'Brien was also claiming to hold the 158lbs title, even though he had been knocked out in the first round of a catchweight contest by Ted Bryant at the St Andrew’s Hall, Westminster, London on 25 November 1890.
On 5 January 1892, Ted Fenton challenged all England at 160lbs.
