1891-03-16 (126lbs) Stanton Abbott w pts 12 Ginger Elmer, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Tom Anderson. Made at 126lbs, Abbott successfully defended his claim at the weight when adjudged to have outscored Elmer. While Abbott deserved the verdict it was a poor fight, with neither man showing his best, and at the final bell the Sporting Life report stated that the audience breathed a sigh of relief. There were no knockdowns nor were there many effective punches thrown all night. On 4 April, Bill Gibbs won a championship competition at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Westminster, London when outpointing Tom Wickwar over three rounds.
