1891-03-31 (115/116lbs) George Dixon w rsc 22 (finish) Cal McCarthy, Bicycle Club Rink, Troy, New York, USA. Referee: Jerry Dunn. Set for 115lbs to decide the American title in two-ounce gloves, McCarthy (114½) was knocked down on six occasions before the referee called a halt at the end of the 22nd round to save him from further punishment. While McCarthy was the better man at long range, once Dixon (111½) got to close quarters his power told.

In England, Patsy Williams won a 116lbs championship competition when outpointing Charlie Mansford over five rounds at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Westminster, London on 30 May, while, according to the Sporting Life, Fred Johnson claimed to be the English champion at the weight on 2 June.
