1891-04-28 (140lbs) George Dawson w rtd 17 (50) Dummy Mace, Gymnastic Club, Sydney, Australia. With both men inside 140lbs this was a defence of Dawson’s Australian, Imperial British Empire and world title claims at the weight. Following a couple of feeling-out rounds, it was Mace (132) who struck first when dropping Dawson (136) once in the third, twice in the fourth, and once in the fifth before being fought to a standstill in the latter session. To avoid punishment Mace was holding on prior to sending Dawson down again with another right hand in the seventh. There was no doubt that Mace’s right hand was a dangerous weapon, but Dawson was gradually working his man out. In the tenth both corners appealed for fouls without getting anywhere, and although Mace sent Dawson to the boards in the 13th, his left doing the trick this time, the latter was up quickly. The next couple of sessions saw Dawson tiring. However, while Mace still looked strong on his legs he was smashed to the floor three times in the 16th by fierce lefts and rights. Saved by the bell, after Mace was overwhelmed at the start of the 17th his corner threw up the sponge.
