1891-05-11 (102lbs) Mike Small w co 6 (finish) Bill Mortimer, Goodwin Club, Shoreditch, London, England. Although there was no title billing given, later reports showed it to have been for the English 102lbs championship despite Small’s earlier loss to George Beach. Having dropped Mortimer (100) in the opening round, Small (101¾) continued to get the better of his opponent and in the fifth he almost closed the fight down. In the sixth, setting up another body attack, Small went after his rival with a vengeance and after taking a terrible pounding Mortimer threw himself down to be counted out with just 12 seconds of the session remaining. It had been a cracking fight, but ultimately Mortimer had been unable to keep Small at bay.
On 30 May at Her Majesty’s Theatre, Westminster, London, Ted Gamble outpointed Jim Knowles over four rounds to win a championship competition at the above weight, while other men who were challenging all England to settle the title at the same time included Tiny Bishop and Ben Jordan.
