1891-05-28 (156lbs) [[John O’Brien]] w co 7 (finish) [[Alf Ball]], Pelican Club, London, England. Referee: George Vize. Made at catchweights, the turning point in the fight came in the fifth round after Ball (167¾) had ended the session in a dazed condition. At this point O’Brien (156) had begun to get on top and in the sixth he dropped Ball heavily. Although Ball got up he was then battered from pillar to post as O’Brien looked for the finisher and with the seventh underway it was clearly seen that the latter was merely biding his time. Eventually a right hand to the jaw put Ball down and following several heavy blows from the same hand O’Brien dropped his rival for the full count.
