1891-05-30 (112lbs) Billy Plimmer w rtd 16 (20) Jem Stevens, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Tom Anderson. Billed for the English 112lbs title, it was Plimmer who made the stronger start, and he continued to have the better of most of the rounds until the tenth when Stevens hit back hard. Prior to that, carrying facial damage from early in the contest, Stevens had stood too square on to Plimmer, thus making himself an easy target. From there on, however, the sessions were much more even, it being a great surprise when Stevens walked out for the 16th, holding out a hand in a token of surrender and claiming that impaired vision was making it too difficult for him to see properly.
Despite the nature of his defeat, by October Stevens had laid claim to the English 110lbs title, with Plimmer going on to greater things.
