1891-06-16 (134lbs) Austin Gibbons w co 4 (15) Jim Verrall, Pelican Club, Soho, London, England. Referee: George Vize. Billed for the world 134lbs title, Gibbons (133½) quickly showed his class and by the third round was forcing Peckham’s Verrall (134) around the ring with both hands regularly finding their mark. Continuing in the same vein in the fourth Gibbons was soon breaking Verrall’s defences down and after working from head to body a solid right to the jaw dropped the latter for the full count. Following his win, Gibbons challenged Dick Burge or Jem Carney to a fight that would produce a world champion at 134lbs. Meanwhile, Verrall continued to claim the English title at the weight but failed to make any further impact.
