1891-06-16 Paddy Slavin w rsc 9 (10) Jake Kilrain, Granite Club, Hoboken, New Jersey, USA. Referee: Jerry Dunn. Slavin, who defended the Police Gazette Championship Belt in this one, had initially gone to America for the purpose of challenging John L. Sullivan, only to be told by the ‘great’ man himself that he had retired. Then, on learning that two of the other leading contenders, James J. Corbett and Peter Jackson, were already articled to fight the match was made with Kilrain. Starting like a hurricane, Slavin (186) roared into Kilrain (190) and had the latter over four times in the third round. Then, having survived the fourth, Kilrain was knocked down repeatedly in the fifth before somehow managing to make it into the ninth, where he continued to be pounded at will. It could not continue the way it was and after Kilrain had just about made it to his feet following another knockdown the referee told him it was all over. The fight was contested in four-ounce gloves.
