1891-07-27 Ted Pritchard w rtd 3 (finish) Jem Smith, The Wrestlers Public House, New Cross, London, England. Billed for the English title, Smith (281½) took a decided lead in the opening round when driving Pritchard (152) around the ring and flooring him twice before time was called. Although both of them went down twice in the second, it was Smith who looked all in at the end of the session before retiring from the fray in the third after being dropped heavily. Following the fight, Pritchard’s backer stated that his charge would not be defending the title as he was not big enough to take on all comers and would concentrate on defending his middleweight championship.
