1891-09-12 (136lbs) Joe Wilson w co 14 (20) Alf Suffolk, Pelican Club, Soho, London, England. Billed for the English 136lbs title after three rounds the money was on Wilson (136) who was beginning to show a formidable left jab, and by the 11th Suffolk’s left eye was fast closing. Thereafter it was nearly all Wilson as he repeatedly caught the brave Suffolk with both hands and at the end of the 13th a terrific right uppercut had the latter down. Coming out for the 14th it was clear that Suffolk could not hold up for long and on the 2.44 mark he was counted out, having been dropped heavily from blows to head and body.
Wilson next challenged Jem Carney to decide the world title with two-ounce gloves. On 6 January 1892, George Sullivan challenged Wilson for the title and, on 28 January, Frank Howson, despite being a 140lbs man, also challenged Wilson at 136lbs.
