1891-10-31 (140lbs) Tom Williams w co 4 (8) George Dawson, Athletic Club, Melbourne, Australia. Billed for the Australian, Imperial British Empire and world 140lbs titles, the Melbourne press’ feeling that Dawson’s skill and general cleverness would avail him nothing against the fighting powers of Williams (138) proved correct. Boxing skilfully in the opening round Dawson (136) kept out of harm's way, but in the second the sheer speed of his opponent began to give him real problems. Although Dawson fought gamely in the third he was beginning to take a pounding, and in the fourth the inevitable knockout was delivered by Williams, leaving another champion to bite the dust.
Dawson reclaimed the title shortly after when Williams went overseas, but he too had left the country, bound for the USA, by the end of the year.
