1891-11-04 (114lbs) Tom Gardner w rtd 11 (30) Charlie Mansford, Social Club, Kennington, London, England. Referee: T. J. McNeill. Billed for the English 114lbs title and a £100 purse, it was a very even contest up to the end of the fourth before Gardner (113) began to take over from Mansford (112½) when seeking to bring his man down with body blows. By the seventh Mansford had weakened considerably and when Gardner drove him into the ropes before dropping him with a big right to the jaw it seemed to be all over. In the eighth and ninth rounds Mansford did little but survive and although he came back wonderfully well in the tenth as time was called he was deposited on the canvas by a heavy right. After being carried to his corner it was clear that Mansford was finished and he should have been retired there and then but on coming out for the 11th Gardner immediately set about him until the sponge was thrown up within moments.
