1892-01-20 (114lbs) Tom Gardner w disq 11 (20) Nunc Wallace, Social Club, Kennington, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Billed for the English 114lbs title, both men started brightly before Gardner (112½) came on strong in the fifth round to drop Wallace (113) with a heavy right to the jaw. Not a man to let things rest, Gardner dropped Wallace twice more, in the sixth and eighth rounds, before the latter came back with punches of his own. From the ninth onwards, Wallace, who was suffering from a bad cold, was a chopping block at the hands of Gardner, but try as he might the St George's fighter could not finish his rival off. However, when Wallace’s cornermen jumped into the ring with 45 seconds of the 11th still remaining the referee had no alternative other than to disqualify the Birmingham man, who was all but out anyway.
