1892-02-15 (112lbs) Alf Sparrow w rtd 10 (15) Tom Read, Hop & Malt Exchange, The Borough, London, England. Although no title billing was given, being made at 112lbs ensured that Sparrow’s claim to the English title at that weight would be at stake. In what was a fairly even affair both men gave and received heavy blows, and it was not until tenth round that Sparrow began to get on top when driving Read before him. After trying to fight back Read was severely weakened, being retired at the end of the session.

Despite repeated challenges to all the leading 112lbs men of the day, Sparrow’s claim went nowhere.
