1892-02-26 (112lbs) Joe Portley w co 11 (20) Charlie Mansford, Social Club, Kennington, London, England. Referee: George Dunning. Billed for the English 112lbs title, Portley (111) took the initiative. However, before too long the taller Mansford (110½) was right back in the contest, and by the sixth there was little to choose between them. Come the seventh the fighting was brisk to say the least, with Portley working well downstairs. For the next three sessions Mansford boxed cleverly, scoring well and making his rival miss. In the 11th it was much of the same until a random heavy right to the jaw sent Mansford clear out of the ring where he remained while being counted out.
On 24 October, Bill Moore outpointed Bill Norton over five rounds at the Goodwin Club, Shoreditch, London to win a championship competition, and by November of the same year Willie Smith was claiming to be the English 112lbs champion, having beaten Tom Gardner at 114lbs.
