1892-03-07 (107lbs) Jim Knowles w pts 20 Fred Precious, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England
7 March (107lbs) Jim Knowles w pts 20 Fred Precious, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Bernard J. Angle. Reported as being billed for the English 107lbs title in some papers, Precious (106) was always there or thereabouts, but it was Knowles (106½) who generally forced the majority of the contest and punched more correctly. By the 14th Knowles' left eye was almost closed but it did not stop him from trading blows up and down with Portley, although the latter had regained his wind and was making things hot for the Brummie. The only knockdown came in the 18th when Precious was momentarily dropped, but he came back so hard right through to the final bell that the decision in favour of Knowles was a tight one. In the aftermath, Precious asked for a return at the 106lbs limit, but there appears to be no further fights at the weight for Knowles despite him continuing to dish out claims to all and sundry until mid 1894.
