1892-03-22 (126lbs) Young Griffo w rtd 4 (finish) Mick McCarthy, Olympic AC, Gaiety Theatre, Sydney, Australia. Billed for the Australian version of the world 126lbs title, according to the Brisbane Courier the fight did not require much description as Griffo (125¼) could have won when and where he liked. As early as the first round McCarthy (125¾) was on the floor, and from that moment on it was just a question of how long would he be able to stay in the same ring as Griffo. Constantly clinching and holding on tight, at the end of the fourth session, with his left eye closed and his face and body badly battered, McCarthy was wisely retired by his corner.
This would be the last title fight at the weight for Griffo, despite two contests against Jerry Marshall, on 20 December and 28 February 1893 at the Darlinghurst Skating Rink, Sydney being contracted for the 126lbs title. Although Marshall, inside 126lbs on both occasions, was twice beaten he could have claimed the title by forfeit after Griffo failed to make the weight but apparently chose not to do so when the fights went ahead at 130lbs.
