Smith (118) started out like a whirlwind, banging in blows from head to body, and almost had Hawkins (116) out on a number of occasions. As the fight began to slow Hawkins came more into it, but in the 13th round he was badly hurt by heavy head blows before being laid out for the count after taking a right-hand smash to the jaw. Smith claimed the American 118lbs title following this win over Hawkins, who was stated to weigh just 114lbs in some papers.
