1892-07-25 (140lbs) Young Griffo drew 22 (finish) Jim Barron, Darlinghurst Skating Rink, Sydney, Australia
1892-07-25 (140lbs) Young Griffo drew 22 (finish) Jim Barron, Darlinghurst Skating Rink, Sydney, Australia. Referee: Mr Diamond. Billed for the Australian 140lbs lightweight title, Griffo, with a disadvantage in height and reach, also came to the ring nearly a stone lighter than his rival. It was a good contest for many rounds and was only declared a draw after 22 rounds when the referee decided that the contest would not finish even if it went on all night. Griffo, who showed great cleverness in avoiding punishment, had forced the fight from the beginning and by the 15th both men were tiring rapidly. The pace had been a fast one and after it was clear that neither Barron nor Griffo could find a winning blow the referee made his decision.
At this stage it was clear that Griffo would not be able to make 126lbs again and following the fight he laid claim to the 130lbs world title.
