1892-07-26 (140lbs) George Dawson w co 29 (finish) Danny Needham, Californian AC, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Hiram Cook. Billed for the world 140lbs title, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, Needham (139) had been claiming the title after Tommy Ryan had been forced (through illness) to pull out of a fight against him in New Orleans, Louisiana on 1 March 1892, leaving Texas Jack Burke to be substituted.
For many rounds Dawson took a beating as Needham hit him with every punch in the book and it was only the Australian’s cleverness and durability that kept him going. In the 15th, however, the tide turned and a crashing right to Needham’s neck sent him down. Most onlookers thought it to be over, but the American got up and even after he was decked again, in the 16th, he managed to drop Dawson in the 17th. How Needham managed to keep going was difficult to understand and in the 25th after Dawson helped him to his feet after another knockdown he was battered right through to the bell. In the 28th, Needham was knocked out of the ring and Dawson followed him just to make sure he did not break his neck in the fall. From there through the 28th Needham went down several times, but after being floored twice in the 29th he was finally counted out.
