1892-09-06 (118lbs) George Dixon w co 8 (finish) Jack Skelly, Olympic Club, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Referee: John Duffy. Made at 118lbs for the world title Dixon (115) and Skelly (116½) got away well, but after the latter was floored in the third round the writing was on the wall. Dropped again in the seventh and bleeding badly, Skelly was rushed in the eighth and following another visit to the boards he was sent crashing on to his face before being counted out.

A gallant failure, Skelly will remain on the record books as the first man to challenge for a world title on his pro debut.
