1892-09-20 (140lbs) Mysterious Billy Smith w co 26 (finish) Shadow Maber, Pastime AC, Portland, Oregon, USA. Referee: Jack Dempsey. With both men inside 140lbs at the 1pm weigh-in, it was Smith who looked the likely winner early on, being vicious, quick and aggressive, and while Maber showed an astute boxing brain he lacked the physical condition to dictate the fight. The Morning Oregonian stated that although Maber dropped to the floor several times to escape the punches coming his way it was not until the 23rd round that Smith went for the finish. After landing the ‘pivot blow’, soon to be outlawed, Smith had had Maber in big trouble and the latter finished the session on his knees. In the 25th, Maber was wobbling around in a sorry state after being hurt by the same punch four times and in the 26th he was up and down five times before being finally counted out.
The contest was staged in five-ounce gloves and following his win over the Australian Smith moved up among the 142lbs men.
